Rare achievement: Infant undergoes successful liver transplant

New Delhi, Feb 5 (UNI) A team of Surgeons have yet again proved why the field of Medicine is considered a Noble Profession by performing a complex life-saving Liver transplant on a nine-month-old boy, who suffered from liver failure due to a rare disorder.
A team of experts, lead by Dr Shailendra Lalwani, Head of the Department of Liver Transplant and Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery, HCMCT Manipal Hospitals, New Delhi, performed the surgery on Ali Hamad, making him one of the youngest babies undergoing a very complex liver transplant procedure.
Hamad s mother donated part of her liver to save her son, born after three kids, who perhaps died of a similar disease that could not be diagnosed and treated on time.

According to doctors, in two instances, both the donor and the recipient were found positive for coronavirus.
Out of them, 23 patients were under regular medical supervision. They didn t contract Covid-19 infection and underwent successful liver transplants. Seven patients who had tested positive for Covid also successfully underwent liver transplant and survived.
‘During the Covid-19 lockdown and the subsequent months, a total of 48 patients were in need to undergo liver transplant on an early basis. ’ Between June and December last year, we have performed 30 liver transplant procedures at our hospital with 100 per cent success rate. Among these, seven recipients and three live donors were Covid-19 positive; and in two instances, both donors and recipients were found positive for coronavirus.
